Motivational Mom of the Month - Katie Matusevich

It's time to highlight another amazing mom in Our Village. Meet this month's Motivational Mom of the Month - Katie Matusevich - our very own Playgroup Captain!

How did you find FIT4MOM Richmond and how long have you been a part of our village?

I found FIT4MOM through my good friend Brittany. She raved about how wonderful the community was, so I decided to give it a try. I fell in love right away and joined in September 2025.

What do you love most about being part of this community?

I have loved meeting so many incredible women. I didn’t realize how wonderful it would be to have people to share everything with—the triumphs, milestones, regressions, and all the ups and downs of motherhood. This community feels like family, and it’s something every mom should experience.

Who are you a mom to?

Adeline (21 months), also known as Addie.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?

I love adventuring with Addie. We’ve taken full advantage of all the opportunities Richmond and beyond have to offer. She truly is the best little adventure buddy.

What two items would you take with you if you were shipwrecked on a deserted island where all your food and water needs were taken care of?

My Kindle so I could finally make a dent in my TBR list, and some kind of music player so I could listen to all my favorite songs.

How did becoming a mother change you?

It made me slow down and appreciate the little things. The ordinary moments feel so much more meaningful now.

If you had a time machine, would you travel to the future or back to the past?

I would travel to the past so I could revisit some of my favorite people and relive a few special memories.

How do you practice self-care?

Massages are my favorite treat, but exercise is my favorite form of self-care. It’s the best way for me to clear my head and reset.

Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Richmond?

I grew up in a small town called Coldwater in southern Michigan. After college, I spent a year living in Australia. When I returned, the teaching market in Michigan was extremely oversaturated. My aunt and uncle, who lived in Falls Church, Virginia, mentioned an opening near them. I applied, got the job, and eventually met my now-husband through a coworker. We decided Richmond was a better (and more affordable) place to start our life together, and we’ve been here for five years now.

Are you a stay at home mom or do you work outside of the home?

I taught for nine years and now stay home with my daughter. In the evenings, I tutor students virtually from kindergarten through 10th grade.

What is the last great book or television series you've read/watched?

I recently finished The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale. I absolutely loved it. It was so thought-provoking, and I loved reading about strong female characters finding their voice and their fight.

How did you meet your partner?

A coworker was getting married, and all of the groomsmen were in town getting fitted for tuxes. She invited me out for drinks with the group, and that’s where I met Tyler. After a couple months of persistence on his part, we finally went on a date—and the rest is history!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A teacher, just like the three generations before me.

If you could choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what song would you choose and why?

“I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston. I love it because it reminds me not to take life too seriously and to enjoy every moment with the people you love.

If your five-year-old self suddenly found themselves inhabiting your current body, what would they do first?

Get an ice cream cone and then put on a dramatic “performance” for my siblings and parents.

If we wanted to say hi, which classes can we find you attending?

Strides 360 is my favorite! I love the upbeat music, the energy of the class, and challenging myself to improve my cardio endurance.
