Motivational Mom of the Month - Anna Umbreit

Somehow we are in the last year of the month and I know I say this all the time but like, HOW!? Where has this year gone!?

We know this is a busy time of year for everyone but we are really looking forward to all the fun things we have planned in Our Village! We are so thankful for each and every one of you being a part of this little community! Today we are extra thankful for our December Motivational Mom of the Month, Anna!

How did you find FIT4MOM Richmond and how long have you been a part of our village?

I found it through word of mouth. I moved to Richmond during the pandemic so wasn’t aware of many resources in the community. I asked about mom-friendly workouts in a local group on Facebook and a bunch of people replied recommending Fit4Mom. I joined when I was about 6 months postpartum and have been a member for a year and a half at this point and I’m pretty sure I’ve tried every type of class in that time.

What do you love most about being part of this community?

How genuinely friendly and nonjudgmental the members are. You can be late, you can have dirty hair, your kid can be crying or throwing things and no one gives you side eye. I’m still building my mom village and Fit4Mom has been a great place to meet other moms.

Who are you a mom to?

Tristan Alexander, my 2 year old son, and I’m currently due with my second baby in Spring 2024.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?

It’s magical watching someone grow and change, literally from the moment they are born. I’ve always been intrigued by human development and I’m so in awe being able to see it in action!

What two items would you take with you if you were shipwrecked on a deserted island where all your food and water needs were taken care of?

I guess a hammock and my cat, Duncan.

If you had a time machine, would you travel to the future or back to the past?

I’ve seen Back to the Future too many times to screw around with the space-time continuum! ;)

How do you practice self-care?

One thing I’ve been trying to do this year, now that I have little pockets of time, is getting back into hobbies I enjoyed before having a baby, like reading books and sewing clothes and cooking new recipes. I’m very creative and need an outlet for that energy, but I had to ignore it for a while in the blur of caring for a baby.

Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Richmond?

I grew up in Maryland and Pennsylvania — my family moved a few times and I’ve actually lived in five states so far. Prior to moving to Richmond, I was in Williamsburg due to my job at the time, but I knew I needed to get back to a more urban and diverse place to live so I had had an eye on Richmond for a while. Once VCU hired me, my husband started looking for a new job and we were able to relocate to Richmond in 2020. We’ve bought a house since then and I don’t plan on moving again so this is the first time in my life where I feel like I can develop a community and really build roots.

How did becoming a mother change you?

It was so humbling. I was used to feeling very competent and capable at the things I did day to day. Then I became a parent and felt like I knew nothing about what I was doing and was pretty sure I was doing everything wrong. I’m happy to say I’m feeling a little more confident in my skills these days, but the toddler phase can still throw me for a loop. And I’m sure going from parenting one to two kids is going to be humbling in a whole new way.

What is the last great book or television series you've read/watched?

I’m an active Goodreads member and have read 22 books so far this year. Of those, I’d say the best were The Schuyler Sisters series by Beatriz Williams, which are historical fiction, and the Finlay Donovan caper mysteries by Elle Cosimano, which are literally laugh-out-loud funny. For TV, lately I’ve been obsessed with The Morning Show on Apple TV — I have a degree in communications and have always been fascinated with media.

How did you meet your partner?

Match.com

What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was very little, I wanted to be a superhero and was pretty disappointed when I learned that wasn’t really an option.

If you could choose one song to play every time you walked into a room for the rest of your life, what song would you choose and why?

No idea…

If your five-year-old self suddenly found themselves inhabiting your current body, what would they do first?

No idea…

Anna, I loved the Finlay Donovan books also but I will say, the first one was the best! Great job on reading 22 books this year! I know it can be hard with motherhood. I also love how you explained motherhood to be so humbling - I really feel that.

Thank you for sharing a little bit more about yourself with us, Anna. We are so glad you have settled here in Richmond and put down roots in Our Village.
