Where did September go!? It’s like you blink and it’s over! I know I’m in full on Halloween costume mode so I always look forward to October! I also look forward to learning more about one of our amazing moms and this month we have Melissa!
How did you find FIT4MOM Richmond and how long have you been a part of our village?
During the summer of 2016, I went to a class in West Broad Village with Natalie and I had a wonderful time and felt so welcomed right away! I had been struggling to find a workout that worked for my then-one-year-old who really didn’t want to be left in childcare. After giving up on that, I relied on my husband to watch her while I worked out and that turned out to be frustrating for both of us! I was so glad to find something where I could bring her along. Plus, I loved the camaraderie of meeting other moms...and I couldn’t believe I waited so long to try! Three years later and my daughter and I still love class.
What do you love most about being part of this community?
I love that everyone is so positive and supportive of one another. It’s pretty unique, I think.
Who are you a mom to?
I’m mom to Malia (4.5) and Myles (2)
What is your favorite thing about being a mom?
My favorite thing about being a mom are the cuddles and the cute things my kids say, especially to each other. Plus, they tell me I’m the best mom in the whole wide world, or stupid. That assessment changes minute to minute.
Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or one hundred duck-sized horses?
I’m not sure a large duck would even want to fight. That would be best. If she does want to fight, I’d still try to distract her with snacks and I think it would work.
How do you stay fit when you're not working out with FIT4MOM?
The main thing I do is walk a lot. I think pushing the kids in the stroller is a pretty great mental break and I love being outside. I also love yoga and try to go to one class and go for a short run at least once a week each. If I can’t get to yoga class, Tara Stiles is my favorite yogi on YouTube.
How do you practice self-care?
Is chocolate self-care? I’d say mainly the exercise, but also a piece of chocolate every night after dinner...and I try to pretend to be alone for a minute while I eat it.
Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Richmond?
I grew up in Eden Prairie, Minnesota which is right outside Minneapolis. I ended up here because my husband works at University of Richmond.
How did becoming a mother change you?
I stop and smell the roses a lot more now.
What is the last great book or television series you've read/watched?
My favorite TV shows lately are Jane the Virgin and Schitt’s Creek. Just love love love them...big smile the whole time it’s on. The best books of the year for me were Last Child in the Woods and A Man Called Ove. I guess I have a nonfiction and a fiction pick! I really like nonfiction reading, actually. Nerd alert.
How did you meet your husband?
He and I were set up by the U.S. Air Force. I was a new lieutenant stationed in rural Montana and I showed up for day one of work and they said “Lt. Jenkins will be your sponsor. He’ll help show you around and answer any questions you have.” He found me an apartment right near his and took me out to dinner...and the rest is history!
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A veterinarian, which obviously changed a lot as I have no pets and declined to hold a toad earlier today.
If your five-year-old self suddenly found themselves inhabiting your current body, what would she do first?
Eat lots of red Starbursts.
Melissa, I LOVED A Man Called Ove! It was such a sweet story and the author has such a poetic way about his writing. I also feel like there should be a Hallmark movie about how you and Marcus met! Lastly, everyone can agree, the red Starbursts are the best!
Thanks for letting us get to know a little bit more about you!
