Motivational Mom of the Month - Jen Salang

Happy...what month is this? I know moms everywhere are gearing up to make really tough decisions so let's take a moment and enjoy a little bright spot, our August Motivational Mom of the Month, Jen Salang!

How did you find FIT4MOM RICHMOND and how long have you been a part of our village?

I found FIT4MOM through a post from ACAC Short Pump for a stroller strides class. I really wanted to join stroller strides as a new mom, but couldn't fit the classes in my schedule. I started following Fit4mom Richmond and discovered Body Back "transformation" and became hooked. I've been a part of the village for 3 years.

What do you love most about being part of this community?

I love the social and emotional support received from this village.

Who are you a mom to?

Emma Reese age 5

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?

It is pure joy to be Emma’s mama. To be able to watch Emma learn, smile, laugh and grow is so special.

Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or one hundred duck-sized horses?

I would say one horse-size duck. I figure I always have snacks with me and I could just throw some snacks and cardio blast my way into an escape.

How do you stay fit when you're not working out with FIT4MOM?

I take walks with my Kipp and Emma around the neighborhood. If I'm lucky, a walk during my lunch break. I am also carb and sugar conscious. “A healthy outside starts from the inside.”

How do you practice self-care?

I have monthly massages and a monthly meetup treat yo’self therapy retreat with the bestie. Of course things simmered down the last few months, so for now the virtual classes are helping me get through.

The great thing about Fit4mom is that it works out with my schedule so that I can attend at least 2 workouts a week to ensure self-care.

Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Richmond?

I grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. I moved to Richmond 18 years ago to work at VCU Health System. I am still with the company and I am an Interventional Radiology Tech.

How did becoming a mother change you?

Priorities have changed. I have put Emma as my number one priority. Although I am always in mama bear mode and I love my family, I also need to remember not to forget about me.

What is the last great book or television series you've read/watched?

Where the crawdad's sing by Delia Owens

How did you meet your husband?

I met my husband in high school, he actually dated my bestie.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I grew up with a vision of being in the medical field. Part of that reason is my mom. When she arrived from the Philippines at 17 years old, she went to the hospital to find out what department would give her hands-on training. Still to this day, 42 years later - she is still working full-time at the hospital. I admired her drive and pushed myself to also have that same vision for my career path.

If your five-year-old self suddenly found themselves inhabiting your current body, what would she do first?

I’m sure 5 year old Jen was eating ice cream when she discovered this. I would drop my ice cream cone and run..... it’s shavasana time!

Jen, I love your treatyoself bestie retreat! That is a great idea and really embodies some me-time self-care! And huge thanks to you as a frontline employee who worked during this entire time! Enjoy doing those virtual workouts at 10pm :P
