Motivational Mom of the Month - Erin Sorkin

We're half way through the year...the weirdest year ever. But even with all the unknowns, one thing is always constant. We. Have. Some. Awesome. Moms. Erin has been with our village for a long time and was once our Play Group Captain and blog writer! We can credit her to the creative questions we ask our moms each month! It's long overdue so join me in getting to know Erin a little bit more!

How did you find FIT4MOM Richmond and how long have you been a part of our village?

It’s been so long that I can’t even remember! I became a part of Stroller Strides in Spring 2011 and took a break when I got pregnant with my second in 2012. I came back and started Body Back in January 2016 after I had my third. I actually did my first session with Natalie when she was a participant. It’s been a great 4 years watching her grow the business!

What do you love most about being part of this community?

I love the constant support, advice on any topic and camaraderie!

Who are you a mom to?

I’m mom to Benjamin(10), Violet(8) and Nora(5).

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?

It’s probably the teacher in me, but I love seeing my kids light bulb moments when they learn and understand new things and master new skills. Seeing their faces light up with pride is a joyful moment. I feel so blessed to be able to be there to see it happen.

Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or one hundred duck-sized horses?

I can’t believe you’re still using this question. I’d say the duck-sized horses for sure! I’m actually really freaked out by birds.

How do you stay fit when you're not working out with FIT4MOM?

Right now I’ve been taking daily walks with my kids in the afternoon and my husband after dinner time. It’s a great way for us to connect after we’ve been apart all day.

How do you practice self-care?

I’m still working on this. I’m an introvert so I charge my batteries by being alone. I’ve been having a hard time right now because I am NEVER ALONE! I try to sneak away whenever I can. My favorite things are a quiet cup of coffee on our deck or a hot bath with a locked bathroom door.

Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Richmond?

I grew up in Cleveland, OH. When my husband and I got married, he was in his last year of law school in NY. His best friend from high school worked at a law firm in RVA so he got him an interview. We both came down and fell in love with the city.

How did becoming a mother change you?

I’m a lot more confident. Motherhood was not something I’d really thought about much growing up. I had a hard childhood and wasn’t sure I wanted kids. I didn’t want to screw them up. I was pleasantly surprised by how natural being a mom actually felt. Being comfortable as a mom led to me feeling more comfortable with myself in general. Thanks, kids.

What is the last great book or television series you've read/watched?

I’ve been watching The Expanse on Amazon. I’m not a Sci-Fi person at all, but I really love it. It’s really gripping and there are some parallels to what’s going on in our country right now. Highly recommend.

How did you meet your husband?

We met in 2003, a few months after we graduated from college. We had just started a Americorps program called City Year. I thought I never wanted to get married, but by December I knew this was it for me. He gets me.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

It was never just one thing! I wanted to be a botanist, a geologist, a forensic scientist and an advertising exec(which is what I have my degree in.). Now I’m a teacher.

If your five-year-old self suddenly found themselves inhabiting your current body, what would she do first?

I think she’d look in the mirror and scream, I’m OLD!

Hahahaha I think all our 5 year old selves would thing that! And yes Erin, we are still using that question (thanks to you) because it generates some great answers!! Thanks for being a part of our Village for so long!
