Motivational Mom of the Month - Erin Purdie

It's the month of L O V E and we're crushin on our Motivational Mom of the Month, Erin! Erin is one of our fabulous Southside instructors who is full of so much energy and does so much while juggling 3 kiddos...we honestly don't know how she does it all!

How did you find FIT4MOM Richmond and how long have you been a part of our village?

I found fit4mom Richmond when I was pregnant with my daughter, Poppy. We had just moved here and I also didn't know anyone so the village really intrigued me! Unfortunately, I was told I had to stop working out due to medical issues, but I was happy to come for stroller strides!

What do you love most about being part of this community?

I was SO in need of a mama community!! Having a safe space to go to as a mom is so hard to find. But I know I can ask these mamas anything and I won't be judged.

Who are you a mom to?

I'm a mom to Burton-4, Poppy-2.5, and Nellie- 9 months... and Mike-32 years. Haha

What is your favorite thing about being a mom?

Oh, that's a hard one! When I was in kindergarten and I drew a picture of what I wanted to be when I grew up, I drew a mom. This is literally everything I've wanted. I love that I was given the opportunity to be home with them and be with them during the day. I realize that's not an option for everyone and I'm so grateful! I love watching them take the world in and become their own feisty selves.

Would you rather fight one horse-sized duck or one hundred duck-sized horses?

Ummm those both sound terrifying to me. But I guess I'd say one hundred duck-sized horses. They'd be kinda cute. And couldn't step on me.

How do you stay fit when you're not working out with FIT4MOM?

I try to make sure to walk our horse sized dog as much as I can. And I feel like chasing around 3 under 4 is working out enough. Now that all 3 are mobile I feel like I never sit down.

How do you practice self-care?

I'm a 7 wing 6 so I need to make sure I do *something* or my anxiety will be crippling. I need my to do lists, so I make sure it's written on there, if it's on the list I've gotta do it. I'll do something as simple as paint my nails, do a face mask, and read. I used to get my nails done religiously every 2 weeks, but with Covid I just do them on my own now. I work a lot at night, so I'll make sure to take one night off a week and do something for myself when the kids go to bed.

Where did you grow up and how did you end up in Richmond?

That's a LOADED question... Haha! I lived in upstate NY (Rochester) until 5th grade when I moved to the suburbs of Chicago (Geneva). I ended up back in Rochester for college and lived there until I moved to DC in 2012. I met my husband the first day there! We moved to Richmond because we didn't want to raise kids in NoVa and I wanted to stay at home with the kids. Mike got a new job in a place called Richmond, a place neither of us had ever even been to, but we love it!

How did becoming a mother change you?

I had no idea that I could have that much love! I remember when I was pregnant with Burt I was scared I couldn't love someone as much as I loved Mike. Then with each kid I was scared I couldn't have enough love for another one. I've always been very empathetic, and that just made it so much more. Whenever I do and say things I try to think about how my kids would see that when they're older, or would I say or do that to my kids? I think it's made me a better person in general.

What is the last great book or television series you've read/watched?

It took me like 9 months, but I finally finished the book Untamed by Glennon Doyle. If you haven't read it, go get it now. Like run. It is LIFE CHANGING. I don't read books twice, this one will definitely be revisited! As for shows, Schitts Creek was fantastic! Otherwise all I watch is Cocomelon. Haha!

How did you meet your husband?

We met the first day I moved to DC. I was staying on a friend's couch (who I met studying abroad in Australia in 2008). I couldn't get into her apartment because she was at happy hour with a friend from college, she told me to come meet up with them. I was literally crying because I had no idea what I'd just done... moved all the way down here without knowing anyone except Katie! Mike said the second I walked into that bar he knew I was special. He took me out for dinner every night for 2 weeks while Katie was out of town!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I told my kindergarten class I wanted to be a stay at home mom. They told me that wasn't a job (Haha joke's on them, I'm a great domestic engineer!), so I decided teacher would work too. I was a teacher until I became a mom :)

If your five-year-old self suddenly found themselves inhabiting your current body, what would she do first?

Play with the kids all day! And there's a baby! She'd be in love.

Erin, I'm so glad you were able to grow up to be what you wanted to be! You're a GREAT Mom! And I have no doubt you were a great teacher with how excellent you are as an instructor! Thank you for sharing the love with us this month!
